LOUDER THAN EVER:
CHAPPELL ROAN X ANDREW DAHLING

For the Pride issue of M·A·Czine, we spoke with Chappell Roan and her makeup artist, Andrew Dahling. The longtime collaborators have worked together on some of the star’s most iconic looks, from her all-green Governor’s Ball appearance to her latest viral VIVA GLAM campaign. We caught up with the pair to talk all things beauty, their shared love of artistry, and how they honour and celebrate the queer icons who came before them – today and every day.

FROM MIDWEST PRINCESS TO M·A·C GIRL

Fresh off the launch of her viral VIVA GLAM campaign, we caught up with our Global Brand Ambassador to discuss what this moment means to her. “It’s cool to be able to combine my aesthetic with M·A·C, create a lipstick, and, on top of it all, raise money for a queer organization,” Chappell Roan tells M·A·Czine. “That means everything to me.”

With her own collection of limited-edition lip shades, Roan joins a long line of artists and cultural innovators who have embodied the VIVA GLAM mission, including RuPaul and Kim Petras. The significance of this legacy isn’t lost on her – she mentions a quote by gay author Larry Mitchell when talking about joining the VIVA GLAM family. “It goes, ‘There is more to be learned from wearing a dress for a day than there is from wearing a suit for a lifetime,’” she says. “I feel like lipstick is similar to that. You can learn a lot about yourself when you put on makeup.”

“YOU CAN LEARN A LOT ABOUT
YOURSELF WHEN YOU PUT ON
MAKEUP.”

— CHAPPELL ROAN

Beyond the glamour and fantasy of her stage persona, Roan recognizes the transformative power of makeup. It’s why she continues to reference past icons and visual cues – currently, she’s into “Surrealist 1920s looks. I’ve been really into Josephine Baker, classic burlesque, and theatre” – and enhance them with her signature showmanship.

“Wearing makeup and being yourself, even if the world may make fun of you – that is activism,” she says. “It also becomes activism by donating proceeds and giving back to the community!”

ANDREW DAHLING IS LIVING THE FANTASY

“I’ve always been interested in glamour. I would watch my mom get ready in the morning; then, behind closed doors, try on all her makeup and shoes and jewelry,” says Andrew Dahling. “It’s always been inside of me.”

The makeup artist has played a crucial role in creating some of Chappell Roan’s most iconic and glamorous beauty moments. Growing up, he had a proclivity toward beauty, and makeup was a natural outlet for this expression. “We must choose a career at some point, and makeup just felt natural to me,” he says. “It’s a way to create hyperbolic, extravagant characters that express a very real emotional reaction to the world.”

“I was in my own world all the time, and the M·A·C counter was like a little cloud floating in the sky,” he says. Speaking to Dahling, he frequently mentions the transformative and magical power of makeup. “To me, makeup in any capacity has the power to shift vibrations – on a limitless scale – and if all this existence is, is vibration, then makeup is pure magic. So, I’m just playing with magic, and it’s fun.”

“I’M JUST PLAYING WITH MAGIC, AND IT’S FUN.”

— ANDREW DAHLING

Dahling has amassed a dream portfolio, working with some of the
biggest names in the industry – and it’s only the beginning. His
advice for people getting started?

“Forget the ego, forget reputation, rationale, what your parents
tell you – you’re creating something new; something this world
has never seen before. How bad do you want it?”

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Happy New Year! We can’t wait to show you what we’ve been up to the last few months. To start, we’re bringing back M·A·Czine.

Back in the day, M·A·Czine was our creative playground. It was where we experimented and brought some of our most daring ideas to life. At M·A·C, we have everything you need to play with your look and express yourself, from minimal to maximal. As the world shifts and bold, confident makeup makes its return, it seems like the perfect time to bring it back.

So welcome to M·A·Czine – let’s embrace this new chapter and create the future of beauty together. It’s time to have fun with makeup again.
