Chantel M

I began my makeup career in Miami, Florida working the agency circuit and part-time at M·A·C. I did a lot of catalogue back then as well as editorial for Latin American-based magazines. My background is costume design and special effects makeup but LA was too far away for this East Coast girl, so when it was time to take the next step in my career, I moved to New York. Since then, I think I have dipped my brushes into just about every area of makeup from film to Broadway to body painting. I work primarily in editorial, beauty and fashion but I love makeup, so I do it all.

My first foray into makeup came in the 5th grade while sitting on the back of the school bus with a girl who was a bit too mature for our group. She gave us what she called the "Joan Jett Makeup 101": heat that blue eye kohl with a lighter so it is nice and soft, then rim your waterline above and below quickly, while the pencil is still melted, so when it cools off on your eye, it kind of sets and wears longer.

Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm SPF 35, Studio Fix Foundation and Extended Play Lash. I would be off to Rome or Athens. Since I couldn't include my Lash Curler, I guess I will be curling with a spoon the old fashioned way!

I have definitely had some memorable moments working the counter. I remember one lovely woman I was helping who was experiencing some serious dryness and irritation with her skin. When I investigated her regimen, she simply told me that she exfoliates once a week, usually on Saturdays when she is cleaning her bathtub. She just puts the Comet cleanser in the tub and then puts some on her face, figuring if it is good on the tub then it will get the job done for her as well!

Hands down, the community. The people I work with have been my family for almost 20 years. They keep things fresh and inspire me.

I am seeing a very casual yet confident woman on the streets of the world. Her skin is perfected, yet not overdone. Attention to detail with subtle highlights and contours. This may simply be punctuated with a great mascara, but more so I am seeing that saturated, bright matte lip.
